Sunglasses are a must-have accessory for anyone planning a beach venture this summer. Not only do they protect your eyes from the sun's rays, but with the right choice of style they can make nearly anyone look seriously cool!
Sunglasses date back to 1929, when they were first introduced on a mass scale on the beaches of Atlantic City, New Jersey; but since then their popularity has remained unwavering with many millions of frames and designs being sold worldwide each year. The most widely sold and famous design - the Ray-Ban Wayfarer - has been around since 1952 and lists John Lennon, Bob Dylan, James Dean, Roy Orbison and Andy Warhol among an impressive inventory of wearers.
Ray-Ban Wayfarers have also been popular in Hollywood, with the style having appeared on the silver screen since the 1950s. Having been worn by Kim Novak in the 1954 film 'Cote d'Azur' and by Audrey Hepburn in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's', the style really took off on the big screen in the 80's.
Perhaps the most famous image of Ray-Ban Wayfarers is in the iconic 1980 film 'The Blues Brothers', starring John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd, in which the style of suit, pencil tie and pork-pie hat is augmented by the addition of a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers. However, Wayfarers were destined to be consigned to memory until Tom Cruise wore them in the 1983 movie 'Risky Business', helping to boost flagging sales, while the style was immortalised by Don Henley in the track 'Boys of Summer'.
While Ray-Ban Wayfarers have featured in numerous movies, so too has other styles of sunglasses. Ray-Ban were also responsible for the Aviator style, with Tom Cruise sporting the trend in 'Top Gun' while variations of Aviator frames appeared in U.S Law Enforcement TV dramas such as 'CHiPs' and 'Starsky and Hutch'. In more recent times, Johnny Depp wore orange-tinted Aviator frames in 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas', while Brad Pitt wore them alongside Angelina Jolie in 'Mr & Mrs Smith'.
The line 'Hasta la vista, baby' uttered by action movie superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger is perhaps one of the most famous lines in movie history. Possibly almost as famous, however, are the styles of
sunglasses worn by the movies' stars. In the first movie, Arnie's killer robot wore Gargoyle frames, while in the second he wore Oakleys. Both styles proved a major success with young fans. After all, who wouldn't want to look as cool as the Terminator?
With the onset of summer, you'll find 2007's latest trends in sunglasses and clothing accessories available in a variety of stores - from the high-street chain to the exquisite designer boutique. So there's never a more perfect time to invest in the perfect pair of sunglasses to suit you.
