As a backpacker or a regular business traveler, you may need to travel with your laptop, camera, cell phone and other gadgets. Care must be taken to protect your laptop from any external (physical) and internal (data security) damage. Always take the laptop with you in flight as a carry-on baggage and buy a good carrier for the laptop. Place the lapotop under the seat in front of you, instead of keeping it one the plane's overhead storage area.

Safety tips for traveling With A Laptop
As a backpacker or a regular business traveler, you may need to travel with your laptop, camera, cell phone and other gadgets. Care must be taken to protect your laptop from any external (physical) and internal (data security) damage. Anytime you are traveling with your laptop make sure that it is in safe hands. This means that you should buy a good carrier for your laptop. This may cost a some extra money, but it is important to keep the laptop in a good condition. Since your laptop is an important piece of equipment, you should ideally keep your laptop with you at all the times. Do not leave your laptop in other baggage, as baggage handlers are not aware of any expensive equipment inside. Always take the laptop with you in flight as a carry-on baggage. Before you leave for the airport back-up all the important documents to an external USB drive, or, burn CDs or picture DVD's for preserving your precious photographs. You can also encrypt all your files on your computer, so they become unreadable for anyone other than the user with the correct password. Make sure that the laptop has enough battery power for checking at the airport.
At the airport you are required to open your laptop when going through security. Turn on your laptop well in advance and keep it on standby mode, this will save you a lot of time. While checking, let your laptop pass through the x-ray machine as it will neither erase any data nor will cause any harm to your laptop's hard drive. If the checking is done via metal detectors, request the authorities for hand checking as you may lose some precious data. Moreover, you should always carry the original receipts of purchase and all necessary documents to ensure that you have purchased the laptop before leaving your own country. In absence of any proof, you will have to pay duty and taxes for the laptop. While you are in-flight or traveling, never let your laptop out of sight. Don't place the laptop in a plane's overhead storage area, as it can easily be stolen from there. Instead, store it under the seat in front of you, where it’s always in sight. To use your laptop or Notebook PC in-flight, make sure you bring the right adapters. Many long haul flights have power ports that supply 15V direct current to power laptop and other devices. For using these power ports you need to purchase "Air/Auto" adapters from the laptop manufacturers. Moreover, always carry an adapter that can handle the voltage at your destination. After use, lock the laptop carefully inside the case.
Once you arrive your destination, change the date and time settings as well as the the modem settings, if required. Avoid plugging in the laptop directly into a foreign outlet. For more discussion and travel information, check out Airline Forums sponsored by Tripmama.com.
